Avoid 0870 and 0845 numbers using your free phone call allowance

Many low cost telephone and broadband packages in the UK have a free telephone call allowance as part of their monthly line rental costs. More often than not though, the free call allowance is limited to only local, 01 and 02 numbers. In the trade these are known as geographic numbers.

Unfortunately many large companies opt to advertise their telephone customer services only via 0870, 0871, 0845 and 0844 prefixed numbers – so called non-geographic numbers. Call to these 08** numbers can cost up to 11p/minute. Why you might ask? Well, guess what, those same companies make anything up to 1.5p/minute, even though these are supposedly not premium rate telephone lines. No wonder they like to keep you on hold for a few minutes “due to excessive call volume“!

The good news is that with a little knowledge you can beat them at their own game and save a pound or two by-passing the expensive 087* and 084*  numbers. The easiest way I find to do this is via a quick search on the SayNoTo0870.com website.

You can either search by organisation (e.g. British Gas – as shown here) or by the phone number you have been asked to call but would prefer not to!

If you are lucky, you might even discover a free 0800 number for the organisation you are trying to call, so it won’t cost you a penny to call them – even better value than using your free allowance as they have to pay!

Don’t forget many low cost phone and broadband bundles include a free call allowance, but only after 7PM at night or at weekends, so don’t call before 7PM if you can or use an 0800 number only.

As mentioned before, my personal favourite is PlusNet* with their great value HomePhone and Broadband package from only £17.25/month. Sounds a lot but this include line rental at £11.25/month so no more money to BT and you get great customer service, wireless router and 10Gb usage allowance per month. Not the cheapest but definitely one of the best based on independent review and excellent customer feedback (not just mine!).

Good luck hunting down those alternative 0870 and o845 numbers using the SayNoTo0870.com website .

I am currently signing on at my local job centre, therefore I am unemployed, however if I have to go for an interview or phone the job centre what number do I have to phone 0845, I think this is rediculous, when I asked what the local number was I was told that they only use the 0845 as it is their call centre and they can put you through to any job centre. I think they are taking the P***
