Free online PDF file merge, split and page extraction solution

March 12th, 2010 Philip No comments

I guess this is not something we all need to do on a daily basis, but many of us have been faced with the need to occasionally join pages from separate PDF files together or extract specific pages from multi-page PDF document. There are quite a few free pluggins out there that help with creating PDF files in the first place, my personal preference is CutePDF,  but I’ve always struggled with the join and extract stuff - like many of you I don’t want to spend my hard earned cash on one of Adobe’s expensive professional products.

That’s why ILovePDF logo was really keen to share my recent discovery of the ILovePdf website – such a simple website, “does exactly what it says on the tin” as they say in that well known UK advert, and makes the job of combining PDF files or extracting one or more pages so simple.

March 9th, 2010 Philip No comments

The strange thing about writing a WordPress blog is that the posts and the feedback your receive is never quite always what you expected. Turns out this blog has all the right words to trigger a high search engine ranking, but unfortunately for passing visitor not the right content.

Tungle.Me – the new way to share your calendar and availability online

March 5th, 2010 Philip No comments

One of the main headaches for hard pressed Internet savy business professionals is finding available meetings slots with similarly hard pressed colleagues, as we all have packed agendas and little free time available. This is typically made even more difficult when trying to arrange meetings with business partners who may not be using the same email or corporate diary system – we’ve all been there with endless emails cyclying backwards and forwards to find the “right-slot”.

Thankfully there’s a relatively new Internet start-up on the scene, Tungle.Me, that offers a free solution to solve the frustration and efficiently allow meeting diaries to be shared. Surveys suggest that for some meetings, more time is actually spent arranging and scheduling the meeting than actually spent at the said meeting.

Tungle.me users can personalize their page by choosing days/times they want to make available, adding contact information, photo, links to other online profiles

Find your next job & Advertise your jobs for free

January 17th, 2010 Philip No comments

I’ve recently been made aware of a great new job-board IndustryJobs.co.uk that both helps job-seekers, to find their next position, and particulary recruiters, to advertise their vacancies whether permanent roles or short-term contracts.

There is a free introductory offer on at the moment for all posts of new jobs, which make it a great solution for small and large businesses alike. As well as jobs advertised on the site itself, there is also a dynamic feed showing jobs from other leading UK job boards as well. The key advantage this site might have for your roles is the great domain name from a search engine optimisation perspective – it will be interesting to see where it ends up in Google and Yahoo’s results lists

IndustryJobs is based on the free open-source JobberBase solution and looks a great implementation.

Problems accessing Windows 7 shared printer from XP & Vista

January 9th, 2010 Philip 1 comment

Just upgraded my desktop PC to Windows 7 and had no problem setting up a shared printer, in my case Canon IP4500 inkjet. My problem arose when I tried to get an older XP laptop to access the shared printer attached to the Windows 7 desktop PC.

The trouble was down to my Windows 7 desktop PC having  new 64 bit drivers that were not compatible with the older 32 bit XP operating system on my laptop. I could find the printer from the laptop – via Control Panel>Printers>Add Printer>A Network Printer.., but the software drivers were not compatible with my old PC and, to make things worse, my Windows 7 desktop wouldn’t allow me to install the older drivers either.

The solution turned out to be first installing the required printer drivers on the XP laptop as a locally installed (even though it wasn’t!) and then changing the port attached to this new printer to a new network port equivalent to the address of the Windows 7 shared address. Read more…
